Call for Special Issues

Targeting the Tumor Microenvironment in Pediatric Cancers

Large-scale profiling of pediatric tumors continues to generate data to identify putative molecular targets and to develop new therapeutical approaches. Targeted therapies, alone or in combination with standard regimens, show potential of maintaining or increasing therapeutic indexes while lowering toxicity and deleterious side effects of chemoradiation in children. However, successful implementation of targeted therapies presents with numerous challenges. Among those, mechanisms of resistance, tumor heterogeneity, appropriate drug delivery, and effective design of informative clinical trials. Alternative targeting tumor microenvironmental cues can help bypass these challenges. Detailed characterization of pediatric tumor stroma and of tumor-stroma paracrine interactions is crucial for development of superior treatments of childhood cancer.

Subjects Coverage
Topics appropriate to this special issue include, but are not limited to:
· Critical issues in molecular targeted therapies
· Studies characterizing tumor stroma
· Identification of putative microenvironment targets
· Novel therapies, pre-clinical and clinical studies for microenvironment targets
· Maximizing genomic data for development of tumor microenvironment targeted therapies
