Plant-Parasitic Nematodes in Bangladesh: Distribution, Economic Impact and Integrated Management Strategies for Sustainable Crop Protection

ABSTRACT
Plant-parasitic nematodes (PPNs) are one of the most damaging yet often overlooked constraints to crop production worldwide, particularly in developing countries. In Bangladesh, livelihoods and food security depend on agriculture; however, the impact of nematode infestations remains poorly understood across diverse cropping systems. This review highlights the historical evidence on the distribution of economically significant PPN species affecting key crop species and their management approaches in Bangladesh, including rice, wheat, jute, vegetables, and orchards. Available literature and survey reports were analyzed to evaluate the occurrence, crop losses, and current control strategies. Several economically important nematode species, including Meloidogyne graminicola, Ditylenchus angustus, Meloidogyne incognita, Pratylenchus spp., Hirschmanniella oryzae, and Radopholus similis, have been identified as causing substantial damage to different crops across diverse agroecological zones. Although researchers are mostly dependent on classical taxonomy, the integration of molecular tools, particularly marker genes and DNA sequencing, has improved species detection. Existing management practices largely rely on chemical nematicides, the use of resistance landraces, biocontrol agents, and organic amendments, which are mostly under pot trial and field-scale validation remains limited. This review highlights critical research gaps, including limited molecular diagnostic capacity, outdated nematode distribution records, lack of economic thresholds for major crops, and insufficient integration of nematode management into national crop protection policies. Improving surveillance systems, developing high-yielding nematode resistance crop varieties, expanding molecular diagnostics, and promoting nematode management strategies are essential for sustainable agricultural production.
