ABSTRACT
High -intensity martial arts such as pencak silat carry significant injury risks with both physical and psychological consequences. This study examined the structural relationships between three psychological resilience dimensions (self-regulation, personal competence, and acceptance of self and life) and two injury response manifestations (intention to retire and change in playing style) among pencak silat athletes. Using a cross-sectional design with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), data were collected from 150 competitive pencak silat athletes (72% male, 28% female, aged 13-26 years) in Central Java, Indonesia, who had experienced sports injuries within the past 12 months. Psychological resilience was measured using an adapted Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, while injury responses were assessed through a validated sports injury response questionnaire. The measurement model demonstrated good fit (χ2/df = 1.388, RMSEA = 0.051, CFI = 0.974, GFI = 0.943), with adequate construct reliability (CR = 0.74-0.93, AVE = 0.60-0.81). Results revealed differential effects: self-regulation and personal competence were primarily associated with intention to retire (β = 0.519 and β = 0.319 respectively), while acceptance showed a very strong influence on change in playing style (β = 1.169). All dimensions showed significant correlations with both outcomes (r = 0.294-0.763, p < 0.001). Acceptance emerged as the most critical factor for adaptive responses, yet received the lowest mean score (M = 23.98), possibly reflecting cultural values emphasizing toughness. These findings suggest that resilience operates through distinct dimensions with specific functions rather than as a monolithic construct, providing evidence-based foundations for developing targeted psychological interventions in injury rehabilitation programs for traditional martial arts athletes.
