Effect of Air Pollution on Respiratory Diseases in the Casablanca Region, Morocco

ABSTRACT
Casablanca Region is confronting strong demographic and socioeconomic growth which negatively affects the environment and the population. Exposure to air pollution of high levels can cause adverse health impacts. However, many recent epidemiological studies have shown positive associations between exposure to air pollution and health. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between air quality and human health in Casablanca region, Morocco. The possible link between air pollution and daily respiratory hospitalization is assessed for various age and sex groups from 2011 to 2013. The pollutants investigated are nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone and particulate matter. The statistical study shows that: the levels of SO2 and PM10 are higher in the area of Ain Sebaâ-Sidi Bernoussi, which can be explained by the industrial activity. The concentration of O3 is highest in the area of Casablanca-city, this result is due to the importance of road traffic. The results showed that road traffic and urban industry are the main causes of respiratory diseases in the region, which requires more action to reduce this pollution. Log-linear Poisson regression is used to model the relationship between the number of respiratory disease consultations and air pollutants and weather parameters. The results found show associations between O3, SO2, PM10 and hospital consultations due to respiratory diseases, particularly for women.
